Understanding Amazon Closing Fees, Shipping Fees and GST on Fees

A practical Amazon.in guide to closing fees, weight-handling/shipping charges and GST on Amazon fees, including why fulfilment channel, price, weight and distance change the seller’s receivable.

Key takeaways
  • Closing fee is charged per sale and depends on item price, applicable fee group and fulfilment channel.
  • Weight-handling/shipping cost depends on fulfilment route and logistics factors such as chargeable weight, dimensions and distance.
  • Amazon India states its displayed selling fees are generally exclusive of GST, so GST on Amazon fees must be included in cash-cost calculations.
  • A seller should calculate the complete fee stack for the exact ASIN rather than combining unrelated examples from different fee categories.

1. Why sellers should separate the fee components

Amazon’s selling fee is not one single percentage. The main stack can include referral fee, closing fee, weight-handling/shipping charges and other applicable programme fees. FBA can also introduce pick/pack, storage and related charges.

Keeping the components separate makes it easier to understand why the receivable changed after a price, category, weight or fulfilment change.

2. What closing fee is

Amazon India charges a closing fee when a product is sold. The amount varies by the item-price range and by fulfilment channel/fee group. Amazon publishes separate closing-fee tables and examples for fulfilment-centre, Easy Ship, Self Ship and Seller Flex routes.

Because it is slab-based, a selling-price change can move the order into another closing-fee range. Recalculate rather than carrying forward the previous amount.

3. 2026 closing-fee update

Amazon India’s current fee page notes a closing-fee update effective 7 September 2026. For affected FC, Easy Ship and Seller Flex fee tables, Amazon announced an increase of ₹1 for products priced up to ₹500 and ₹3 for products priced above ₹500, subject to the detailed group tables.

Use the current table for the actual category/price/fulfilment combination. Do not apply a single increase blindly to Self Ship or every product group without checking the live fee page.

4. What shipping or weight-handling charges represent

For Amazon-fulfilled or Amazon-delivered routes, weight-handling/shipping charges can depend on package size, actual or volumetric/chargeable weight, distance/zone and programme rules. Amazon’s fee page publishes starting amounts but the actual order can differ based on these factors.

For Self Ship, the seller generally bears their own courier/logistics cost, which should be entered separately when calculating profitability.

5. Dimensions can matter as much as actual weight

A lightweight but bulky item can attract a higher logistics cost because carriers and fulfilment programmes use package dimensions as well as scale weight. Measure the packed product, not only the bare product, and keep catalogue/package data accurate.

If measured weight/dimensions change, review both the fee estimate and the operational packaging rather than assuming Amazon’s earlier charge will remain stable.

6. GST on Amazon fees

Amazon India’s fee page states that the listed fees are exclusive of GST and that applicable GST is added. For profitability planning, this means a seller should not stop at the pre-GST referral/closing/shipping fee total.

Tax accounting, input-credit eligibility and final GST treatment are separate matters for the seller’s accountant. The calculator should show the fee cash impact without pretending to determine the seller’s final tax liability.

7. Worked fee-stack example

Suppose an order has a ₹70 referral fee, ₹20 closing fee and ₹60 fulfilment/shipping fee. The Amazon fee subtotal is ₹150. If 18% GST applies to those fees, the GST component is ₹27 and the Amazon-fee cash impact becomes ₹177 before any other applicable programme charges.

Then subtract product cost, packaging, advertising and seller-specific costs to estimate real contribution. This example is illustrative; use the current fee table for the actual ASIN.

8. Why settlement does not equal profit

Settlement can include order revenue, Amazon fees, refunds, reimbursements, adjustments and taxes/deductions across multiple transactions. Even when the payout reconciles perfectly, the seller still has COGS, advertising, packaging and operating costs outside Amazon.

Use fee calculation for pre-sale pricing and settlement reports for post-sale reconciliation. They answer different questions.

9. Pricing checklist before a change

Confirm fee category, current selling price, fulfilment channel, packed weight/dimensions and destination/zone assumptions. Recalculate referral, closing, logistics and applicable FBA/programme charges, then add GST on Amazon fees and seller costs.

Test more than one price point where the product is close to a fee threshold. A small price change can change the fee slab enough to alter the expected contribution.

Seller questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Amazon closing fee a percentage?

Closing fees are generally fixed amounts determined by item price, applicable fee group and fulfilment channel, not simply a percentage of sales.

Why is shipping fee different for products with similar weight?

Package dimensions, chargeable/volumetric weight, fulfilment route, distance/zone and current programme rules can affect the amount.

Does Amazon charge GST on its seller fees?

Amazon India states that displayed fees are generally exclusive of GST and applicable GST is added to the fees.

Does Self Ship have no Amazon fees?

No. Self Ship can replace Amazon delivery charges with the seller’s own courier cost, but referral, closing and other applicable Amazon charges can still apply.

Where should I check the latest fee amounts?

Use Amazon India’s current Fees & Pricing page and Seller Central fee previews/calculators for the exact product and fulfilment route.
