Amazon GTIN Exemption: Requirements, Images and Common Mistakes

Understand when a GTIN exemption may be relevant, what product photos should show and why brand/category consistency matters.

Key takeaways
  • GTIN exemption is category- and brand-specific; approval is not universal across a catalogue.
  • Use clear real-world product and packaging photos rather than mock-ups.
  • The brand shown on the product or packaging should match the brand used in the application/listing.
  • Approval does not remove the need to comply with other listing and product requirements.

What GTIN exemption is for

A GTIN exemption can allow eligible products to be listed without a standard product ID such as a UPC or EAN in a particular brand/category combination. Eligibility and evidence requirements can vary, and Amazon can change the process.

Prepare real product and packaging photos

Use clear, well-lit photos of the actual item and its packaging. For three-dimensional products, capture all relevant sides; for flat products, front and back may be sufficient. Bundles should show the components as well as the assembled bundle where relevant.

Permanent brand markings may include printed branding, sewn-in labels, embossed/debossed marks, permanent tags or nameplates. Temporary overlays or digitally added brand names are not a substitute for real product evidence.

Keep brand and category information consistent

A common source of problems is inconsistency between the brand entered in the exemption request and the branding visible on the product or packaging. Likewise, an exemption approved in one category should not be assumed to apply automatically to another category.

After approval

When creating the listing, use the approved brand/category combination accurately. GTIN exemption does not waive product-safety, compliance, intellectual-property or catalogue-quality requirements.
